Muay Thai Madness: Learning Muay Thai in Thailand

Muay Thai is a big deal in Thailand: there is a huge sense of natural pride over this martial art. Muay Thai is much more than a sport. As they say: a past without Muay Thai means a future without Thailand. I've seen Muay Thai fights in Chiang Mai, but now it's time to take my curiosity to the next level... Let's just call it a very intense (and awesome) introduction to Thai Boxing!

Learning Muay Thai in Thailand : Muay Thai Lab, Bangkok

National sport of Thailand, Muay Thai is a combat sport similar to boxing and martial art. It uses the entire body, incorporating punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. It is so popular that instead of watching a fight, you can simply try it yourself and put yourself through the gruelling training of champions.

I've discovered Muay Thai Lab by chance while wandering in and around Chao Phraya river during my first trip in Bangkok. I loved the location in Tha Maharaj, the view on the river and the atmosphere. I promised myself next time I come in Bangkok I will book a class, and so I did. I tried Muay Thai, and I loved it!

MY ATTEMPT AT BECOMING A MUAY THAI WARRIOR...

I had considered a week-long Muay Thai course, but didn't get enough time to do it -it's still on the bucketlist though!-. I came across Muay Thai Lab and decided to give it a try for a one time Muay Thai Workshop. After all, training in such a beautiful spot along Chao Phraya River could only ease the pain, right? (answer: no it doesn't)

For a newbie, the whole thing could be intimidating -instructors, fighters, gear, traditions. But in Muay Thai Lab, things are different: the staff is super friendly and relaxed, they explain everything from Muay Thai history to techniques, and, lucky me, I'm the only student this day! Which means I have my own private instructor -which also means there is always someone pushing me, and I cannot fake it!

"A WARRIOR DOES NOT GIVE UP WHAT HE LOVES, HE FINDS THE LOVE IN WHAT HE DOES."

Muay Thai is all about traditions. The workshop started with the tiger balm massage before the training, history about Muay Thai's roots, warm up, then we went through the basics of boxing down. Ich! Ich! The instructor really pushed me to my limits, the training was intense from the first minute 'till the last.
