With its chilled vibes and low living cost -even in an expat bubble such as Thao Dien in District 2-, Saigon is a destination very appreciated by digital nomads and freelancers. Big plus? There are tons of lovely coffee shops to discover and to make your perfect #officeoftheday. So many it’s sometimes hard to decide which one to choose…
Saigon’s coffee scene has blown up in Thao Dien, and the district now has new coffee shops opening all the time. Since we moved here, I’ve enjoyed exploring and trying new cafes every week -which means also tasting many fresh juices and lots, lots of cakes. Because, as you know, I have the sense of sacrifice, for you, dear readers. The crazy thing is, even after months drinking and eating around, there are still tons of places I haven’t been to. So this is not an exhaustive list of all the cafes in Thao Dien, but a list of some of my favourites so far -there are still a lot to discover, but it would be impossible to go to all of them !
20 of the best cafes in Thao Dien
You’ll find listed below in random order 20 coffee shops in Saigon with descriptions, photos, opening times and addresses. Be aware that places of business in Asia tend to regularly move or simply close and disappear without warning, so you might want to check their Facebook pages to be sure they’re still around before hoping on your bike.
If you live in Thao Dien, you’ve probably already spotted Soma Art Cafe -you simply can’t miss its stunning street art wall. The terrace is a perfect place to sit and work with a freshly pressed juice on a not-so-hot day. There’s also a terrace upstairs if you want to feel like you’re in your own little garden. The menu offers plenty of delicious breakfast options, as well as smaller bites. Inside, the decoration is very simple, yet with comfy vintage club chairs.
Opening times : 7:00am - 00:00am, 11:30pm on Sundays
Location : Hẻm 51 Lê Văn Miến, Thảo Điền
Known for its incredible brunch selection, The Vintage Emporium serves from freshly pressed juice to fluffy pancakes -to die for!- and hearty breakfasts in a homy decor. If you need tranquility, come before 11:30am, as this is when the Instagram nerds arrive -yes, it’s a thing. Lovely dresses, tons of make up and personal photographer. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful villa, at the very end of a quiet street. There are two gorgeous terraces, one in the entrance, and one at the back with a view on the swimming pool. Compared to other options in Thao Dien, it is pricey, but the interior design and the food are really worth it.
Opening times : 8:00am - 10:00pm
Location : số 1 Đường số 39, Thảo Điền
Situated down block C of Tropic Garden, this cafe is very quiet, as mostly used by local -by that I mean, people living in Tropic condo. The music is smooth, which helps focusing when you need to work. Air-con is just the way you want it. One thing appreciated is the way tables are settled: you can choose between low coffee tables and sofas or proper tables, with some of them hidden in small corners, so it feels like you’re in your own private living room. Again, perfect to focus. They’ve got some good bites for lunch at reasonable prices. Friendly staff.
Opening times : 6:30am - 9:00pm
Location : Tropic Garden, Đường Số 66, Thảo Điền
If you walk by Bonjour Cafe The Art, you can’t miss it : it’s that beautiful red facade covered with flowers. I have to warn you : you better like the smell of flowers to go there -because it’s strong. The whole place is covered by flowers, floor to ceiling. Walls are colourful, scribbled and decorated with paintings and objects inspired by Paris. There’s French music going on all day -not always the best though, yes, you might have to bear Lara Fabian... Bare in mind that this is a trendy Instagram spot, so it gets crowded with photographers on weekends. By the way, you’ll need to pay to take photos with a proper camera (other than a smartphone), which I found stupid as people taking photos with their phone are as annoying as the others, but I guess at least it limits the amount of photographers -a bit. Coffee and juices are good, pain au chocolat yummy.
Opening times : 7:30am - 10:00pm
Location : 40 Đường, Thảo Điền
5. Nha Tien
Situated in a quiet corner north Thao Dien, Nha Tien is a lovely choice for a relaxing pause. Being able to have a coffee on a terrace with the sound of birds singing and rarely any bikes passing by is a luxury in Ho Chi Minh, and could almost make you feel you’re somewhere else. It’s all open with big fans, which is very appreciable when the air ain’t too hot. The menu is short yet full of delights. The secret of Nha Tien? A secret garden at the back : it hides a gorgeous wooden house directly imported from Hoi An, and a little courtyard decorated with lanterns. That’s where the staff grows its herbs and veggies. On top of good food and good people, you can also enjoy nice books and magazines.
Opening times : Tues-Sunday 9am - 10pm
Location : 215 Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, Thảo Điền
6. La mia cafe
La Mia Cafe is the perfect stop when it’s crazy hot outside and you reaaally need to cool down. The air-con inside is very refreshing, but if you’d rather stay outside, the little terrace is lovely -and very green! They serve fruit juices in giant glasses on an arty industrial atmosphere. And they’ve got some books for you to read if you want to relax a bit. Otherwise good music, nice cosy place.
Opening times : 8:00am - 10:00pm
Location : 5 Nguyễn Cừ, Thảo Điền
In quiet Trần Ngọc Diện, An Cafe Saigon is a beautiful place to stay for coffee, juice or even more -I told you about their delicious food in this article. The restaurant is spacious, so you have different options: you can either sit outside on big tables with wooden benches and cosy cushions, around a coffee table or inside, under the fans, if you’re too hot. The decor is inspired by Hoi An, very colourful with beautiful fountains, Buddha sculptures and exotic plants. As yummy as inspiring.
Opening times : 7:30am - 10:30pm
Location : 10 Trần Ngọc Diện, Thảo Điền
8. Mori Coffee
Mori Coffee is probably one of the best places for coffee lovers in Thao Dien. This little cafe holds a very warm atmosphere with beautiful jazzy music and coffee smell in a lovely industrial yet cosy decor. It’s one of these places that make your creativity explode. The choice of coffee specialities is wide, with a high quality of coffee beans coming from all over the world. I love to sit by the window for some people/motorbike watching whilst working.
Opening times : 7:30am - 9:00pm
Location : 85 Đường Thảo Điền, Thảo Điền
If you’re into French viennoiseries and pastries, don’t look any further, Saint Honore Saigon is the place to go. From pains au chocolat to raisin escargots, they’ve got some delicious treats for you to start the day -with a fabulous mandarin juice not to be missed. There’s an indoor cafe, but the best is to sit outside early morning when the air is still nice and breezy, and it’s all quiet. The garden is beautiful with plenty of exotic plants, a little pond and even a playground for kids -I tell you more about it in my post Ho Chi Minh City with kids.
Opening times : 6:30am - 10:00pm
Location : 17 Trần Ngọc Diện,, Thảo Điền
Known for its fabulous brunches, Mekong Merchant is a beautiful cafe restaurant with inside and outside seating options. They’ve got a gorgeous courtyard with big wooden tables. Juices and smoothies are amazing. The decoration creates a 'homey feel’, like if you were saying at some friends’ house for the holidays. There’s even a small playroom for the kids.
Opening times : 7:00am - 11:00pm
Location : 23 Đường Thảo Điền, Thảo Điền
11. Dolphy Cafe 2
Dolphy cafe is known as a favorite for digital nomads in Thao Dien -and that’s why this small shop gets easily packed on weekends. It sometimes feels more like an co-working space than a coffee! There’s a big desk that can be convenient if you need to work with colleagues, as well as small tables. The atmosphere is cosy and quiet -except in peak time. Plugs everywhere, always convenient if you run out of battery. Coffee and juices are good.
Opening times : 7:00am - 10:00pm
Location : 25 Nguyễn Cừ, Thảo Điền
12. Lang Art
This colourful coffee on Xuân Thủy is one you shouldn’t miss! Juices are excellent and the choice of coffee impressive. The staff is very friendly, it’s always very peaceful, not too many people. There is no air-con, but a nice air with the fans. Not too trendy -so you won’t find the Instagrammers there, which can be appreciable sometimes. One of my top choices !
Opening times : Closed on Monday, Tuesday - Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm, Weekends 9:00am - 8:00pm
Location : 38 Xuân Thủy, Thảo Điền
Do I really need to mention it? L’Usine is one of the places to be in Thao Dien. They’ve just opened their new branch in Thao Dien this summer and already are very popular. You can choose to sit either in the air-con room or outside with fans. Good food, good drinks, good music, nice staff and lush garden behind the windows. Everything you need for a nice break. Don’t miss their shop upstairs, where you’ll find hip shoes, clothings, bags and gift ideas.
Opening times : 7:00am - 10:30pm
Location : 24 Đường Thảo Điền, Thảo Điền
14. The Loop
Another favourite amongst freelancers, The Loop is a spacious cafe on the corner right after An Phu Supermarket. When you avoid the peak hours (brunch time and weekends), the atmosphere is peaceful and studious. The comfy sofas are perfect to sit back and read a book whilst doing some people-watching. If you need some quiet, go upstairs, you’ll find a cosy corner with a cool view on the street.
Opening times : 7:00am - 9:00pm
Location : 49 Đường Thảo Điền, Thảo Điền
15. l café & beer
L Café & Beer is a small arty coffee shop situated between Vin Gallery and Soma Art Lounge (see above, n’1). The atmosphere inside is cosy, with colourful velvet sofas and armchairs, fresh plants and flowers, and a beautiful wall covered with yellow ceramic tiles to add a vintage touch. The air-con is well balanced to get the perfect temperature -yes, that needs to be mentioned, as it is not always the case in Asia. Outside, you’ll find a lovely terrace, perfect to do some people watching or to take photos in front of the gorgeous painted wall. They serve coffee as well as juices and local craft beer, with reasonable prices.
Opening times : 7:00am - 9:00pm
Location : 4 Le Van Mien Street, Thảo Điền
16. Tho Cafe
With its minimalist wooden decoration Japan inspired (I’m guessing) and its open-air space, Tho Cafe is one of my favorite cafes in Thao Dien. The choice of music is a big plus, as it’s very smooth and relaxing, contrasting with the extreme heat and crazy traffic outside. This coffee shop makes you feel you’re in a serene bubble in the midst of the city’s mayhem. They serve nice drinks but not only -their coconut cookies are to die for.
Opening times : 8:30am - 6:00pm, except Saturdays opening at 8:00am
Location : 55 Nguyễn Cừ, Thảo Điền
17. surf shack
Here’s a cafe with a unique atmosphere in Thao Dien! When you’re sipping a drink at Surf Shack, you could almost think the beach is nearby... Chill’ music, cool vibes, skate and surfboards on the walls, this small cafe is everything you need to relax and dream about your next surf trip. The menu is very simple, with some snack food and burgers, sodas, cafes. No fresh juices. Watch the opening hours, as they close during the afternoon.
Opening times : 10am-2pm, 5pm-10pm
Location : 6 Tống Hữu Định, Thảo Điền
Zuzu is hidden at the far end of Trần Ngọc Diện -you can see the big Zu Zu sign from afar. This cafe / concept store is one of the most charming places to have a cup of tea around. You will find outside a beautiful old car with artistic decorations, then push the tiny door to enter into an intimate little wooden house. There are only a few tables, so it never gets too busy. Shoes, books, natural cosmetics, you’ll also find an array of quality products to buy. The menu is concise yet efficient : there are only good things to eat and drink in Zu Zu. Sitting options inside and in the lush garden. Definitely on my top list for an inspiring hour of work with a fresh juice.
Opening times : Closed on Monday, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00am - 6:00pm
Location : 48A Trần Ngọc Diện, Thảo Điền
19. Mad House
Prepare for a pleasant break in an exotic setting. Mad House has a big space with standard tables as well as comfy sofas and coffee tables and a large bar outside, plus seating options inside with air-con. The decoration is very soothing for the eyes, as it’s all about nature -a gorgeous jungle style. Go in the morning to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. You’ll find a large choice of breakfast options as well as detox juices, tea and coffee. No doubt it’s also a great spot for afterwork drinks. Don’t forget your mosquito repellent as the beautiful little ponds attracts them.

Location : 6/1/2 Nguyễn Ư Dĩ, Thảo Điền
20. mr 8 coffee
Situated at the corner between Xuân Thủy and Dường Thảo Điền, Mr 8 Coffee is a great spot to do watch Thao Dien’s intense life from the window table -or the terrace. Atmosphere is minimalist, simple and elegant -white walls and wooden discreet decoration. Music soothing and calm. Cappuccino is great -plus, it’s served with a mini cookie!
Opening times : 6:30am - 10:30pm
Location : 29 Đường Thảo Điền, Thảo Điền
